Scunthorpe United 2 Manchester United 5 Carling cup report

Scunthorpe United 2 Manchester United 5 report

United initially had a scare early on as Scunthorpe took the lead but they fired level shortly afterwards and then romped to victory with goals from midfielders Ji Sung Park and Darren Gibson, a first goal for Chris Smalling and a double from Michael Owen put Scunthorpe to the sword and gave them nothing but the opportunity to get a consolation goal in the last minute.

It was again a case of another competition, another team for the Reds with every player from Sunday’s win over Liverpool rested. Still there were nine senior internationals in the eleven – plenty of quality to open a new quest for silverware and to excite the sell-out 9,000-plus crowd at Scunthorpe’s Glanford Park. But the home fans were off their seats for one of their own players inside the first thirty seconds when striker Jonathan Forte forced his way into the area, albeit without testing Kuszczak. The win sees United march on into the 4th round.
